This past week was one for the books in Canadian immigration, marked by an unprecedented level of activity from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). The headline news is the remarkable succession of three distinct Express Entry draws held on consecutive days, inviting a wide array of skilled individuals to apply for permanent residence. As your trusted Canadian immigration consultant, I'm here to break down these significant developments and what they mean for you.

The Main Event: An Express Entry Triple-Header

In a rare move, IRCC conducted three rounds of invitations this week, signalling a strong and targeted approach to meeting Canada's economic and demographic goals. Here’s how it unfolded, with information sourced directly from IRCC's official "Rounds of Invitations" page:

  • August 8, 2025: French-Language Proficiency Draw

    • Invitations Issued: 2,500

    • Minimum CRS Score: 481

    • Details: This draw targeted candidates with strong French-language skills. It underscores Canada's commitment to supporting Francophone immigration across the country.

  • August 7, 2025: Canadian Experience Class (CEC) Draw

    • Invitations Issued: 1,000

    • Minimum CRS Score: 534

    • Details: This draw focused on candidates who have at least one year of skilled work experience in Canada. The higher CRS score for this draw reflects the strong qualifications of candidates already established in the Canadian workforce.

  • August 6, 2025: Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) Draw

    • Invitations Issued: 225

    • Minimum CRS Score: 739

    • Details: This draw invited candidates who had already received a nomination from a Canadian province or territory. The high CRS score is a result of the 600-point bonus these candidates receive for their provincial nomination.

This series of draws, issuing a total of 3,725 invitations, clearly demonstrates IRCC's strategy of targeting specific streams of candidates to address diverse labour market needs.

Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) Updates

While the federal government was busy with Express Entry, the provinces were also making moves:

  • British Columbia: The BC PNP has stated that it does not anticipate resuming its general or priority occupation-targeted draws in 2025. Instead, the province will issue a limited number of invitations to high-impact candidates.

  • Other Provinces: Many provinces will see their nominees invited through the federal PNP-specific Express Entry draw. It's always a good idea to monitor the websites of individual provincial nominee programs for the latest updates on their specific draws and eligibility criteria.

Business Immigration and Start-Up Visa Program

There have been no major new announcements regarding the Start-Up Visa (SUV) program this week. However, it's important to remember the changes that have been implemented in 2025, including a cap of 10 applications per designated organization and a longer, three-year open work permit for successful applicants. These changes aim to attract the most innovative and high-potential start-ups to Canada.

What to Expect in the Coming Week

After such an active week, it's possible that we may see a slight pause in Express Entry draws. However, given the trend of category-based selections, we could also see a draw targeting specific occupations, such as those in healthcare, STEM fields, or trades. As always, the best approach is to ensure your Express Entry profile is up-to-date and as strong as possible.

Interesting Immigration Tip of the Week

The Importance of the Tie-Breaking Rule: You may have noticed a "tie-breaking rule" listed in the details of each Express Entry draw. This rule comes into play when multiple candidates have the same CRS score as the cut-off. In such cases, IRCC invites candidates who submitted their Express Entry profiles before the specified date and time. This highlights the importance of not delaying the creation and submission of your Express Entry profile. Even a few hours can make a difference!
