Welcome to your weekly update on the latest happenings in Canadian immigration! This week has brought a mix of new opportunities, policy adjustments, and important reminders for those looking to call Canada home. Let's dive into the key events:

Express Entry Sees New Draws:

The Express Entry system continues to be a major pathway for skilled workers. This week saw not one, but two significant draws:

  • All-Program Draw on May 1st: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) conducted an all-program draw, issuing 1,000 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for permanent residence. This is welcome news for candidates in the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, and Canadian Experience Class.

  • First Healthcare-Specific Draw of 2025 on May 2nd: Recognizing the critical need for healthcare professionals across the country, IRCC held its first targeted Express Entry draw of the year for candidates with experience in healthcare occupations. This draw issued 500 ITAs, demonstrating Canada's commitment to bolstering its healthcare system.

Alberta Launches Attractive Moving Bonus for Skilled Trades:

In a bid to attract skilled tradespeople, Alberta officially opened applications for its "Alberta is Calling: Moving Bonus" on May 1st. This initiative offers a one-time, tax-free $5,000 incentive to eligible workers who move to the province and work in designated in-demand trades. This could be a significant opportunity for those with the right skills looking for a fresh start in a vibrant province.

Important Update for International Students Regarding School Transfers:

As of May 1st, a significant policy change has come into effect for international students in Canada. Previously, the process for switching Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) was relatively straightforward. Now, international students must ensure they continue to meet the conditions of their study permit, which includes actively pursuing studies at the DLI for which their permit was issued, unless they have received explicit authorization from IRCC to change institutions. This change emphasizes the importance of careful planning when choosing a study program and institution.

North Bay, Ontario, Releases Full List of Occupations for PR:

The Rural Community Immigration Pilot (RCIP) continues to offer pathways to permanent residence in participating smaller communities. This week, North Bay, Ontario, released its full list of 25 in-demand occupations that are eligible under their RCIP stream. This provides clarity for potential applicants with skills and experience in these areas who are interested in settling in this northern Ontario city.

Nova Scotia Introduces New Online Endorsement System for AIP:

Effective May 1st, Nova Scotia launched its new online system for Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP) endorsement applications. This digital platform aims to streamline the process for employers looking to hire foreign workers and for candidates seeking permanent residence in the province through the AIP.

IRCC Provides Update on Processing Times:

While not a specific event, IRCC released its latest processing time updates in April 2025. It's always recommended to check the official IRCC website for the most up-to-date estimates for your specific application type. Understanding these timelines can help applicants plan accordingly.

Temporary Relief Measures for International Students Ending:

A reminder for international students: the temporary policy that provided some flexibility around off-campus work hours and other study permit conditions is drawing to a close in May 2025. It's crucial for students to ensure they are aware of and comply with the standard study permit regulations.

Looking Ahead:

This week has shown continued activity across various immigration streams, highlighting Canada's ongoing efforts to attract skilled workers and support regional economic development. Keep an eye on the official IRCC website and trusted news sources for further updates and announcements.
