It has been an incredibly busy and productive week in the world of Canadian immigration. While the landscape is shifting toward a more "controlled and sustainable" model, the doors remain open for those who are prepared and strategic.
Whether you are already contributing to the Canadian economy or dreaming of making the move, this week’s updates show that Canada continues to value talent, dedication, and the vibrant diversity that newcomers bring.
Express Entry: A Triple-Header of Invitations
This week was a powerhouse for Express Entry, with three distinct rounds of invitations that targeted a wide range of candidates:
March 16, 2026 (PNP Only): IRCC issued 362 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) specifically for candidates with a Provincial Nomination. The minimum CRS score was 742.
March 17, 2026 (Canadian Experience Class): In a massive boost for those already working in Canada, 4,000 ITAs were issued to CEC candidates. The minimum CRS score was a competitive 507.
March 18, 2026 (French Language Proficiency): Strengthening Canada’s Francophone identity, 4,000 ITAs were issued to candidates with strong French skills, with a remarkably accessible CRS score of 393.
The high score for the PNP draw is standard, as a provincial nomination automatically adds 600 points to your profile. However, the CEC and French draws are the real highlights. With 8,000 invitations issued in just two days, it is clear that Minister Lena and the IRCC are prioritizing those who have already integrated into the Canadian workforce and those who support our official languages. If you have Canadian experience or French skills, now is truly your time to shine!

Provincial Spotlight: Ontario’s Bold Moves
The Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) was particularly active this week. On March 18, they issued invitations across several key streams:
Masters and PhD Graduates: Over 1,100 invitations were sent to recent graduates who are ready to fuel Ontario’s innovation sectors.
Healthcare (Physicians): 97 invitations were issued specifically to doctors, reinforcing the province's commitment to our healthcare system.
REDI Pilot: Invitations were also issued under the Regional Economic Development through Immigration pilot, targeting growth in smaller communities like Lanark and Leeds.
Ontario is moving away from broad invitations toward highly targeted, employer-driven needs. For international students, this means that finishing your degree in Ontario remains one of the strongest PR pathways available.
Business Immigration: The SUV Pause and the Road Ahead
As many of you know, the Start-Up Visa (SUV) Program is currently on a strategic pause for new applications (unless you hold a 2025 commitment certificate).
While the pause might seem discouraging, it is actually a move toward "quality over quantity." The government is working on a new, more targeted entrepreneur pilot program expected later this year. For my business clients, this is the time to refine your business plans and focus on "innovative, scalable, and job-creating" models. The next iteration of business immigration will likely favor those with high-growth potential.
Big News: The New TR to PR Pathway 2026
One of the most exciting updates this week is the "quiet launch" of a new TR to PR Pathway aimed at transitioning 33,000 temporary workers to permanent residency over the next two years. This program focuses on workers already in Canada who are contributing to essential sectors like healthcare, trades, and STEM.
From the Leadership: Minister Lena & PM Mark
Minister Lena Metlege Diab has been a strong advocate for integrity this month, which is Fraud Prevention Month. Her message is clear: "Spot, Stop, and Report." She reminded us that no one can guarantee a visa and that using authorized representatives (like an RCIC) is the only way to ensure your application is safe.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mark Carney tabled the 2026-27 Main Estimates. While there are budget cuts aimed at making the government leaner, the focus is on digital transformation. The PM is pushing for faster, AI-supported processing to handle applications more efficiently even with a smaller budget.
We are seeing a shift toward a more high-tech immigration system. This means faster processing for clear, well-documented applications, but it also means the system will be less forgiving of errors. Precision in your documentation is now more important than ever.
Looking Ahead: What to Expect Next Week
In the coming week, I anticipate we might see a focus on STEM or Healthcare-specific category draws in Express Entry. With the budget discussions highlighting defense and technology, IRCC will likely look to bring in more talent to support these national priorities.
Expert Immigration Tip: The "Status Check" Advantage
With the new TR to PR pathway opening up, the most important thing you can do right now is ensure your current temporary status (Work or Study Permit) is valid for at least the next 6-12 months. Having a valid permit not only keeps you eligible for these new transitions but also gives you the "Canadian Experience" points that are currently driving the lowest CRS scores in years.
