Welcome to this week's blog post, a summary of all the important events in Canadian immigration. We'll cover everything from the latest draws to program updates and what you can expect in the coming days.

This Week's Top Story: Parents and Grandparents Program Intake Opens

The most significant news this week is the opening of the 2025 Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) intake. Starting July 28, 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) began sending out 17,860 invitations to apply (ITAs) to prospective sponsors. This process is expected to take about two weeks, with the goal of accepting 10,000 complete applications for permanent residence.

A key detail for this intake is that invitations are being sent exclusively to those who submitted an "interest to sponsor" form in 2020 but have not yet received an ITA. If you submitted a form in 2020, be sure to check your email, including your spam and junk folders. For those not invited this year, the Super Visa remains an excellent alternative, offering a multiple-entry visa for up to 10 years and allowing stays of up to five years at a time.

For sponsors, it is important to note that you must meet the minimum necessary income (MNI) for your family size for the three tax years preceding the application. The specific income requirements are:

  • Family of 2: $47,549 (2024), $44,530 (2023), $43,082 (2022)

  • Family of 3: $58,456 (2024), $54,743 (2023), $52,965 (2022)

  • Family of 4: $70,972 (2024), $66,466 (2023), $64,306 (2022)

A spouse or common-law partner can co-sign the application to combine incomes if the sponsor doesn't meet the requirements alone.

Express Entry Draws and Rounds of Invitation

While there were no Express Entry draws this past week, there was a major draw on July 22, 2025. IRCC issued 4,000 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) to candidates in the healthcare and social services occupations category with a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 475. This marks a significant increase in the number of invitations issued for this category compared to previous draws this year. The last draw before that was on July 7, 2025, when IRCC invited 356 candidates under the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) with a minimum CRS score of 750.

Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) Updates

There were no major PNP-specific updates this week. However, many provinces are actively issuing nominations to Express Entry candidates, so it is always a good idea to research which provincial streams you might be eligible for.

Business Immigration and Start-up Visa Updates

While there were no new developments for the Start-up Visa program this week, it is worth noting that some tax changes are coming into effect in 2025 that may impact entrepreneurs and business owners. It is important to stay informed about these changes to ensure your business plans are compliant.

What to Expect in the Coming Week

With Express Entry draws happening almost weekly, we could see a new draw in the coming days. Keep an eye on the IRCC social media channels and website for any announcements regarding draws or policy changes. The PGP invitations will also continue to be sent out.

Elgin Immigration Tip of the Week

When preparing your immigration application, attention to detail is paramount. One small mistake or missing document can lead to significant delays or even a refusal. Double-check all forms, organize your supporting documents clearly, and use a checklist to ensure everything is in order before submission.
